Plasticity and genetic basis of cichlid gill arch anatomy reveal novel roles for Hedgehog signaling

چکیده
Teleost gill arches are exquisitely evolved to maximize foraging efficiency, and include structures for the capture, filtering, processing of prey. While both plasticity a genetic basis arch traits have been noted, relative contributions genetics environment in shaping these remains poorly understood. East African cichlids particularly useful this line study due their highly diverse plastic feeding apparatus. Here we explore gene-by-environmental effects on cichlid GRs by rearing pure bred species F3 hybrids different environments. We find that anatomical differences between dependent environment. The architecture is also largely distinct did, however, note few genomic “hotspots” where multiple map common region. One these, GR number across arches, maps ptch1 locus, key component Hedgehog (Hh) pathway has previously implicated oral jaw shape plasticity. Since Hh signalling not development, explored functional roles pathway. Using small molecule inhibitor cichlids, as well zebrafish transgenic systems, demonstrate levels negatively regulate number, necessary sufficient maintain trait. A shared role for sonic hedgehog signalling in patterning chondrichthyan gill arch appendages and tetrapod limbs.
Chondrichthyans (sharks, skates, rays and holocephalans) possess paired appendages that project laterally from their gill arches, known as branchial rays. This led Carl Gegenbaur to propose that paired fins (and hence tetrapod limbs) originally evolved via transformation of gill arches. Tetrapod limbs are patterned by asonic hedgehog(Shh)-expressing signalling centre known as the zone of polari...
متن کاملSequential roles of Hedgehog and Wnt signaling in osteoblast development.
Signals that govern development of the osteoblast lineage are not well understood. Indian hedgehog (Ihh), a member of the hedgehog (Hh) family of proteins, is essential for osteogenesis in the endochondral skeleton during embryogenesis. The canonical pathway of Wnt signaling has been implicated by studies of Lrp5, a co-receptor for Wnt proteins, in postnatal bone mass homeostasis. In the presen...
متن کاملThe genetic basis of biodiversity: genomic studies of cichlid fishes
Genomic techniques allow new approaches to long-standing questions in evolutionary biology. In particular, the development of linkage maps will accelerate the identification of genes underlying adaptive traits. We discuss the application of these technologies to understanding the radiation of cichlid fishes in Lake Malawi, East Africa. We have developed a linkage map for Oreochromis niloticus a...
متن کاملGenetic basis of differential opsin gene expression in cichlid fishes.
Visual sensitivity can be tuned by differential expression of opsin genes. Among African cichlid fishes, seven cone opsin genes are expressed in different combinations to produce diverse visual sensitivities. To determine the genetic architecture controlling these adaptive differences, we analysed genetic crosses between species expressing different complements of opsin genes. Quantitative gene...
متن کاملGenetic basis of adaptive shape differences in the cichlid head.
East African cichlids exhibit an extraordinary level of morphological diversity. Key to their success has been a dramatic radiation in trophic biology, which has occurred rapidly and repeatedly in different lakes. In this report we take the first step in understanding the genetic basis of differences in cichlid oral jaw design. We estimate the effective number of genetic factors that control di...
